Welcome to Term two. A special welcome to the new children and families joining Room 5 during the term. Each second Tuesday I am released to work for part of the day on the management and leadership tasks associated with the Deputy Principal role. Shelley Berry teaches Room 5 on these Tuesdays. We also welcome Rachel and Ana who are student teachers who will be in Room 5 for part of the term. Our school theme for the year is “Who Am I?” This term we will be focusing on ourselves through the Kia Kaha programme and on our families and the local area.

I am looking forward to a great term. Please come in to talk to me if you have any issues or information to share about your child. You can e-mail me at:deanne@owhiro.school.nz

A day at Owhiro Bay School for a New Entrant

School starts at 8.55am and finishes at 3pm. Some children thrive on this full day of learning along with the time around other children, while others will be tired in the first few weeks. It is important to get your child familiar with the school programme and routine from day one. However, if the length of the day is a concern please speak to me about it. There is always an option of collecting your child earlier during this initial transition period.

The morning programme focuses on literacy - Oral language, writing, Handwriting and Reading. The afternoon programme focuses on Mathematics, Physical Education, The Arts and Topic related activities. The timetable for each day is written on the Blackboard and can also be found on the classroom window by the door. If we are not in the classroom then please look here to find where we are.

As soon as your child starts school he/she will bring home a daily reading book (Monday-Thursday). It will be brought home in their book bag (this is where you will also find school notices and other important messages to you). This book is one that they have shared in class during the day and should be easier for them to read. At this stage it is important to encourage reading for fun and enjoyment at home and so the books read at home will be achievable and enjoyable. Please return the book to school the next day in their school bag. The child then puts this book into their 'Book Box' each morning before school.

On a Friday they will bring home their poetry book to share with you over the weekend as well as a Library book on the Room 5 library day. Please return these on Monday.

Your child will get an opportunity to share 'news' with a friend/talking partner each day and have a special news day each week to share their news with the whole class. The children are encouraged to bring things such as books, postcards, newspaper items, insects etc to talk about. Please do not let them bring toys to school as we can not guarantee their safe return.

On Wednesday and Friday mornings we have 'Discovery Time' with the rest of the junior school. During this time the children have an opportunity to experience a variety of different activities related to the areas of study that week as well as the Key Competency we are learning about.

Our school assemblies are at 2.30pm on a Monday and at 9.00am on a Friday. Parents and caregivers are always welcome to attend either of these.

The school endorses healthy eating habits. Children's lunches should be as healthy as possible and we encourage only water to drink at school. Please ensure your child has a named drink bottle at school each day. Teachers supervise children eating lunch for the first 10 minutes of lunchtime, after this they are able to go and play. We have a 30 minute morning tea time to encourage the children to sit and eat 2 items from their lunchbox during this time as well.

Each child has a cubby hole assigned to them in the classroom. This is for storing work and their belongings during the day. They also have a coat hook for their school bag and clothing. Please ensure that all belongings are named. Lost property can be found near the lunch ordering room. During terms 1 and 4 sunhats are compulsory when outside.

If you have any concerns about anything that is happening at school or anything that you need to let me know about your child or home please do not hesitate to contact me, either before or after school. I am also contactable via e-mail (deanne@owhiro.school.nz).
